Food Servings — on how hungry?
A designer questions the systems we are a part of— Episode 1/12
Have you ever been surprised with the quantity of food served in a restaurant? Sometimes it’s too much, sometimes too lil.
The question at that time is, how hungry are you?
In fact, it is exactly a hunger that is driving the whole experience.
Imagine one could choose to order 400gms and
donate 100 gms because that’s how the system is, or that’s how hungry you are.
Pick up a usual food menu, what are the listed things?
1. Name of the dish
and sometimes, additional details like how spicy or such.
2. Whether it’s the main course or otherwise.
3. Basic Ingredients, flavors
4. And the price of the dish
Isolating the eating experience from the ambiance,
the majority would make their decisions pivoting on the
above information, unless one has other biases.
These simple deviations in the need-based anchor points have
affected the whole supply chain in a
much deeper way than we assume.
We all know food wastage is a major concern all over the world with more than 40% of the produce being wasted.
Now the question here is,
Why have we not come up with a simple give and take system anchored on the real need, for something as basic as this?
On how hungry one is.
Ps — A designer trying to ask everyday questions on the systems we all are a part of. The plan is to have a series of 12 writings.
